Cohere Parse 5 loses the benchmark on points. It wins on cost per page.

Cohere Parse 5: A Game-Changer in Document Parsing at Scale

Cohere Parse 5, released on Thursday by Cohere, offers a unique selling point—price-to-performance, positioning it as a cost-effective solution for enterprise-level document parsing. While it may not top the charts in accuracy compared to larger models like GPT-5.5, Opus 4.8, and Gemini 3.5 Flash, it aims to deliver a score comparable to these "frontier" models at a lower cost.

Enterprises face challenges when feeding PDFs, slides, and scanned documents into AI pipelines due to tools' inability to preserve structure or handle complex layouts accurately. Parse 5 addresses these issues with its single-pass architecture, processing pages as images through a vision-language model to generate structured Markdown.

Key Features:

  • Architecture: Built on Cohere Labs' North-Micro-Vision-Instruct architecture with an 8,192-token context window and a 4.6GB footprint.
  • Language Coverage: Supports Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish with stable accuracy; other languages offer lower-accuracy zero-shot support.
  • Output Modes: Provides Markdown strings per page or blocks mode for enhanced traceability with HTML, bounding boxes, and descriptions for tables and images.

ParseBench Comparison (a benchmark for document-parsing tools) reveals that Parse 5 scores 79.2 across three dimensions: tables, content faithfulness, and semantic formatting. Despite being outperformed by larger models, it surpasses several competitors, including LlamaParse, Mistral OCR 4, and Azure Document Intelligence.

"Document parsing isn't solved because the hard part isn't reading text; it's preserving structure and meaning," said Nils Reimers, VP of AI Search at Cohere. "Enterprise documents mix tables, diagrams, charts, and formatting that change the interpretation of data."

Parse 5 is now generally available through various platforms:

  • Cohere API
  • Model Vault (Cohere's secure, single-tenant platform)
  • Microsoft Foundry
  • AWS SageMaker
